OOC: This Moriarty is based on Anthony Horowitz's Moriarty, though the casting is obviously from BBC's Sherlock and ACD's Sherlock Holmes stories.  Additionally, some facts were taken from The Hound of the D'Urbervilles

Character Information:

No one quite knows where James Moriarty comes from. A child genius, he wrote a treatise on binomial theorem that was so well-received, it earned him a position as a mathematical chair in a smaller university. Sherlock Holmes would later posit that he "had a criminal strain in his blood", a fact that James holds to be decidedly untrue. James was highly intelligent, true, and his capability for empathy is low, but there had been no criminals in his family. At least, not to his knowledge.

His father named both of his sons for him, granting them the name James in turn. As the older boy, and mostly self-sufficient, he was often overlooked for the more emotionally needy younger brother. His own turn to criminal activities was driven by an initial curiosity and sustained by a skewed sense of morals. After all, wasn't it better if the underworld were organized? If the chaos was curbed?

It isn't as if the criminals in question receive no benefit from his control. For his fee of 20%, he advises on their plans, and in the event that they are caught, arranges for their bail, and handles disputes. Everything has a purpose and everything has a place.

Interactions with Sherlock: Sherlock Holmes would like to believe that he is Moriarty's greatest rival. What he is, instead, is the key to James' greatest disguise. James became aware several months prior that there were Americans intending to invade the UK's underworld. With their ruthless violence, they were quickly stripping Moriarty of his allies. He was required to test Sherlock, to make sure he was a suitable candidate for what James had in mind. He led Sherlock on a merry chase, stroking his fervor and his ego. It was a risky ploy, but when the time came, he faked his death.

Naturally, Sherlock faked his, too. It was just that James wouldn't know that for several years. He left enough clues to send whoever would be looking for him after the cannon fodder, while, in his own disguise, he went after the same Americans who sought to drive him out. The only person who knew he survived was Sebastian Moran, his right hand man.

Personality: James Moriarty is incredibly clever, but that goes without saying. He's manipulative, ruthless, and a master of disguise, but Sherlock Holmes could tell you that.

This Moriarty is capable of friendship, as he sees it. There are several that he would refer to as his true, and trustworthy friend. This will not stop him from killing them if he deems it necessary. He protects what he believes to be his, and views the city of London and the world at large in a largely clinical, cold way. He dislikes getting his hands dirty, and finds directly killing someone to be a distasteful act that should be saved as a necessity. There's a reason he employs Moran, after all.
